Beginning December 18 2025, the Simose Art Museum in Hiroshima Prefecture will present newly acquired works by Miwa Komatsu.

This fiscal year, the museum has added works by Miwa Komatsu, Sam Falls, and Tomokazu Matsuyama to its collection. To mark these acquisitions, the museum is presenting "SIMOSE New Collection Exhibition Part Ⅱ― Sam Falls, Miwa Komatsu". This exhibition highlights the newly collected works of Komatsu and Falls, offering audiences a closer look at the practices of both artists. It follows Part I of the exhibition, which centered on Sam Falls and Tomokazu Matsuyama.

Miwa Komatsu

Miwa Komatsu is a contemporary artist who expresses the spiritual world, including invisible spirituality and life energy, through motifs such as Komainu (guardian dogs) and Divine Spirits. Komatsu, who has performed live paintings both in Japan and abroad, has also developed a significant artistic presence in Hiroshima, including a powerful performance with "prayers for peace" in front of the Great Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima in 2022. This exhibition will introduce her unique artistic world, featuring over 30 works from her early copperplate prints to recent pieces, centered around newly acquired works, including 《In the Treasure Rain, a Pair of Lustrous Green Maples Becomes a Gate on the Mossy Horizon》, which was created at Jojakko-ji Temple in Kyoto in 2019.

Sam Falls

American artist born in 1984. In recent years, he has attracted growing attention for his process-based practice, in which he arranges branches, leaves, and flowers on canvas, scatters pigments, and exposes the work to sunlight, rain, and wind so that natural forces complete the painting. One of his new collections, Spring to Fall (2023–2024), is a monumental work spanning over 45 meters in width, giving viewers a curious sensation of being drawn directly into nature. In the latter half of the exhibition, three new works created on Miyajima during his visit to Japan in October of this year will be presented for the first time. Incorporating materials unique to Hiroshima, including the natural environment of the sacred island and trees that survived the atomic bombing, they offer an encounter with a deeply site-rooted body of work.
