When Shimamoto was poor, he could not afford to buy canvas. As a substitute, he came up with the idea of using newspaper glued together and named it the paper-vas. Since it was made of paper, so fragile that holes would appear in some places when he was writing. There has never been a work with holes in it, and Shimamoto's paintings with holes were highly praised by Jiro Yoshihara.
There is an interesting episode in this work. In later years, many people saw this work and pointed out its similarity to the work of Lucio Fontana, an Italian spatialist artist, and some criticized it as an imitation. The back of the work is made of newspaper and has a date on it. Becoming known that Shimamoto made it before Fontana’s perforated works, so that he was able to save his honor.
