跟隨上田桑鳩學習書法,井上有一渴望將書法轉化成藝術,並於1952年打破傳統以藝術書法為目標創立了「墨人會」。藝術家於1952年在瑞士巴塞爾藝術館的展覽中得到國際認可。繼年,英國藝術評論家赫伯特.里德(Herbert Read)極其欣賞井上於聖保羅雙年展所展出的作品。同時他的作品在德國第2届文獻展和美國卡內基國際展得到高度的讚譽,並於1962年和1965年於德國科隆的魯道夫·兹威納畫廊開辦個展。通過錯誤法去研發出這獨特的墨水紋理,「單一字」擁有着無與倫比的魅力,具有全面性的價值。尤其是井上著名作品——《貧》,則代表了藝術家的創作精神的;井上拒絕將自己的藝術商業化,因此他一身也只是一位教育家。金澤21世紀美術館於2015年為他舉辦了一場大型的回顧展以紀念井上有一的一百週年誕祭。
