Foam Sculpture (Toshiro Yoshida)

In Gutai, artists were constantly exploring ways to use various materials in their works.
Toshiro Yoshida's work creates bubbles by pumping air into a container of detergent solution dissolved in water using an electric pump. Various forms were created by combining the concentration of detergent, the height of the container, and the capacity of the pump, presenting the audience with bubbles as a work of art that changed depending on the production environment. In the early years, the body of work was seen as a response to the Abstract Expressionist and Unformel movements, but the aspect of "the application of science and technology to art" is what differentiates the Gutai from these movements.
From the mid-1960s, this trend intensified, and the new members began to work more and more with science and technology.
