Henrik Aa. Uldalen was born in South Korea in 1986 and raised in Norway after being adopted at the age of four months. He later spent time in Barcelona, Florence, and Mexico City before moving to England in 2015. Henrik is a self-taught artist whose practice bridges expressionist and classical figurative painting.


Developed over more than 20 years, his technique blends precise figuration with abstract impasto, presented in a contemporary manner. Henrik explores the darker aspects of life, nihilism, existentialism, longing, and loneliness, juxtaposed with fragile beauty.


His practice helps him process personal experiences, as he explains: “Painting has helped me work through trauma and the deeper anxieties in my life, helping me to understand myself, and the world around me.” Though a figurative painter, he prioritizes emotional and metaphysical content over narrative, creating what are essentially self-portraits projected onto models.
A recurring motif in his paintings — figures with closed or covered eyes — symbolizes not the physical world, but internal states of struggle, atmosphere, and emotional unrest. The poignancy of his canvases, achieved through striking paint application, creates dreamlike or liminal spaces with surreal undertones.
