-  Could you tell us about what inspired you to begin your career as an artist and the journey that led to your current artistic style?

Kanamaru: During my time at Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Design (1997-2003), I was influenced by my mentors Professor Masataka Oyabu and Professor Chinami Nakajima, as well as learning about the achievements of artists from the Design Department such as Toshio Arimoto and Toshiyuki Enoki. This inspired me to pursue that path.

In my early days, I painted realistic portraits and still lifes using acrylic paints, but when I felt frustrated and reached my limits, I casually painted an animal. The result unexpectedly fit my sensibilities perfectly, and this became the turning point that allowed me to find my own unique expression, leading to where I am today.

- Could you share your reasons for choosing animals as your primary motif and the thoughts you put into them?

Kanamaru: The first animal I painted was a turtle. I was attracted to its mystical presence as a symbol of longevity that evokes a sense of eternal time. After that, I began painting ancient fish and reptiles, and now I paint a wide range of animals including mammals and birds. Rather than simply observing and copying their forms, I try to extract their unique shapes through my own filter and depict their inner nature.

 - When and from what do you draw inspiration for your creative work?

Kanamaru: I believe past experiences and memories have a significant influence. For example, places I visited in childhood, entertainment I encountered as a boy, art I viewed as a student—while I'm not consciously aware of these while painting, I feel they naturally emerge in the completed works.

Harmony Created by Multiple Layers of Paint and Cracks

- Could you tell us about the techniques and materials you focus on in your artwork?

Kanamaru: I primarily use acrylic paints as a base, combined with mineral pigments, powdered materials, and collages of fabric and English newspapers, which is why I classify my technique as mixed media. The color planes I apply to the animals' bodies are created by layering paint 20 times using rollers and painting knives.

For the backgrounds, I use a cracking technique. By revealing the colors hidden beneath through the cracks, I create depth in the composition. I've always enjoyed creating textures (matière)to showcase the differences in the qualities that various materials  possesses.

 - What do you focus on when using colors in your works and selecting colors?

Kanamaru: While I create works using many colors, I prioritize using colors that I personally find pleasant. At the same time, when finished, I'm conscious of creating paintings that are simple and visually clear, such as red paintings or blue paintings.

Wishes Entrusted to Animal Presence and Future Challenges

- What themes or messages do you want to convey through your works?

Kanamaru: Since ancient times, animals have been rooted in our lives as family and friends, and sometimes as objects of awe. They have also served as "vessels for projecting our thoughts," filling the gaps in our hearts. I have been creating with the goal of expressing the breath of these animals and the sparkle of life that can be felt. I hope viewers will enjoy dialogue with the animals through my works.

 - Could you share any themes, expressions, or visions you'd like to challenge in the future?

Kanamaru: I'm turning 47 this year, and when I look back on my artistic career in the future, I want to create works that I can proudly call "Yuji Kanamaru's representative works of his 40s."
