HARUMI ORI: I am Here
August 19 - October 1, 2017
Whitestone Gallery Karuizawa is pleased to announce Harumi Ori’s first exhibition in Japan – “I am Here”.
Born in Tokyo, Ori grew up in the multi-cultural environments of the United States and Malaysia: the artist is now based in New York, the city of diversity.
“I am Here” is a series of comprised artworks that Ori has been presenting since 2001: using plastic mesh, which is usually used in construction sites, she develops a new concept of sculpture which transforms the floating moments of our everyday life into eternity. Besides, her works are known for its ‘site specificity’. For this exhibition, the artist will visit Karuizawa to produce a new work based on the town.
Ori was awarded grand-prix at the Lumine meets Art Award (2016), then, won the public art competition by DOT, NYC Department of Transportation and a scholarship from the Japan Foundation in the following year. This succession of award-winnings shows how she is prospected beyond the border. This exhibition will be a significant first step for Ori’s artistic career in Japan. We would like to take this precious opportunity to invite you to visit us.
