Followed by “Shozo Shimamoto × AU exhibition”, Whitestone Gallery Taipei is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition “GUTAI / Yasuo Sumi” on October 7th, 2017. Yasuo Sumi, born in Osaka in 1925 and joined Gutai art association in 1955, is known for using soroban (Japanese abacus) as well as vibrator and traditional umbrella as painting techniques. Sumi’s work is full of the tension of life in movement, traversing in the wide-ranging amplitude from chaotic universe to rustic landscape. As Japanese art critic Yoshio Kato said, “Yasuo Sumi’s capability and power of expression took a flash of inspiration that would not have occurred to an ordinary person, and using a typical Gutai method, turned it into art.” While Shozo Shimamoto praises it as “…not that they represent a convenient form of brush, but the fact that they are completely integrated with the artist’s character.” In fact, Sumi’s creational motto was “yakekuso, fumajime, charanporan” (desperation, absence of seriousness, irresponsibility). This exhibition will showcase the variety of works from mesh works to works on canvas and paper. We cordially invite you to experience the energy of an uninhibited soul. ARTIST

SUMI YASUO
Yasuo Sumi starts painting while working as high school teacher alongside with Shozo Shimamoto, one of the founding members of Gutai Art Association. Sumi who uses soroban (Japanese abacus) as the material of teaching mathematics, discovers by chance that there is beautiful trace left after rolling painted soroban on paper. Since then, soroban becomes synonym for Sumi's technique as well as vibrator and traditional umbrella. Sumi joins to Gutai in 1955 and continues to exhibit his works at each subsequent Gutai exhibition until its disbandment. The number of improvisational creations reflected his three principals "desperation, absence of seriousness, irresponsibility" is praised by the leader of Gutai, Jiro Yoshihara. As well as Shimamoto, Sumi experiences many exhibitions in Europe and USA, gets popularity especially in Italy.
