赤瀬川原平

Genpei Akasegawa is not only an artist who successfully transitioned from the avant-garde to the larger realm of popular culture but also an award-winning writer and photographer. He emerged on the Japanese art scene around 1960, starting in the radical "Anti-Art" movement and becoming a member of the seminal artist collectives Neo-Dada and Hi Red Center.

The famous Model 1,000-Yen Note Incident involved a real-life police investigation and trial. Important figures in the art and cultural world testified in a Tokyo courtroom and debated the definition of creative freedom, which cemented Akasegawa's place as an inspired conceptualist. His irreverent humour and cunning observation of everyday life made him famous as a writer, peaking with over 20 publications.

His critically-acclaimed publications include: The Power of the Elderly (1998), received the Best-known Award in 2001; Fairy Sakura, Laity Sakura (1993), received JTB Travel Literature Award; Screenplay, Rikyu (1990), was nominated Screenplay of the Year, the Japan Academy Film Prize; The Adventures on the Streets of Tokyo (1987), received the Essay Award of Kodansha Ltd.; Yukino (1983), received the New Writer Award of the Noma Literary Prize; My Father Disappeared (1981), received the 84th Akutagawa Prize, and Touch of Your Skin (1979), received the New Writer Award of Chuokoron-sha.

In 1986, Akasegawa and his collaborators, including the Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori, formed a new group: Rojō Kansatsu Gakkai (Street Observation Society), to incorporate Akasegawa's interest in Hyperact Thomassons into the investigation of the material culture and everyday life in Japan.
