KAREN SHIOZAWA: Forever
KAREN SHIOZAWA draws on the landscapes and memories of the Netherlands, where she spent her early childhood, as the source of her visual language. Through her distinctive painting technique, she explores the shifting interplay of light and shadow. This book brings together her artistic practice to date, with a focus on works created between 2016 and 2026.
Shiozawa’s process begins by building up the surface through numerous layers of paint. After covering the entire canvas with oil paint, she gradually scrapes away the upper layers, revealing the colors beneath. Vivid hues emerge as though a light were gradually being illuminated in the darkness. Through this layered process, she does not seek to reproduce landscapes as they appear in reality, but rather to capture spaces transformed by memory and the atmosphere that lingers within them.
Over the course of a decade of artistic practice, countless landscapes have emerged, flowed, and transformed into new forms of light. Alongside the artworks, this book traces the time and memories that lie behind them, offering an intimate journey through the world Shiozawa has encountered and contemplated through her practice.
In addition to documenting exhibitions held in various locations, the publication features an in-depth interview conducted on the occasion of her solo exhibition in Beijing in 2025, as well as a critique by Meiji Hijikata, Director of the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki.
Just as light is constantly shifting, so too do our memories and perceptions of the world gradually change. Shiozawa hopes that the landscapes she has painted over the years will quietly give rise to new stories within each person who turns the pages.
