Whitestone Ginza New Gallery is pleased to present "How Long Have You Been a Stranger to Yourself?", the first solo exhibition in Japan by K. Tsai CAI.

Widely recognized as one of Taiwan’s leading television hosts, writers, and creative figures, Tsai has also been deeply engaged with the art world for many years as a dedicated collector of contemporary art. In recent years, he has increasingly focused on creating text-based artworks, drawing upon his acute sensitivity to language. His long-standing engagement with words - as both a host and a writer - has found a new form of expression through painting.

In contemporary art, text has been employed in many ways: as a vehicle for social critique, an expression of identity, a component of graffiti culture, or as a visual element whose lines and forms become part of the artwork’s design. In Tsai’s work, however, text exists primarily to convey the meaning of the words themselves to the viewer. Through a deliberately pared-down visual language, color and design are reduced to a minimum, allowing viewers to encounter a single word or short phrase in a quiet and direct manner. Words that may have been overlooked in daily life, or whose significance has faded through familiarity, are reactivated through the format of painting, connecting with the viewer’s inner world and taking on renewed meaning.

Speaking about these works, Tsai has remarked: “This was always your painting - I just helped you find it.” This statement reflects not an act of self-expression, but rather a spirit of service: a desire to create works that resonate with the life and emotions of each viewer, to the point where they feel as though the work has always belonged to them. The artworks function as devices through which viewers can remember and reclaim a more authentic sense of themselves.

In addition to the Chinese and English texts that Tsai has previously employed, this exhibition will feature works in Japanese for the first time. This new development reflects the artist’s desire to connect more intimately with Japanese audiences and their inner lives. In a contemporary society saturated with language, these works aspire to become something like electrical wires connecting viewers to their own lives - creating opportunities for quiet reflection and dialogue with oneself.
