Inter×Faces: SENKO TAKAHASHI, YU KAWASHIMA, AND KENKI TSUJIMOTO

Ginza New Gallery

2024.09.06 - 09.28

INTRODUCTION

This exhibition features Senko Takahashi (1966-, Tokyo) who is known for his “Bijinga” painting (portrait of women) by mainly using acrylic; Yu Kawashima (1988-, Shizuoka) who reveals the world of monotone using mineral pigments; and Kenki Tsujimoto (1989-, Nagasaki) who works on mixed media of oil, acrylic, and mineral pigments. By juxtaposing three artists, neither generation nor background nor techniques are in common, under the unified theme of “portrait” as well as by highlighting their viewpoints and characteristics, we intend to show how interaction and resonance among them will be surged.

Senko Takahashi

After graduating from Tama Art University, Senko Takahashi moved to Manhattan, New York, where he was active as a graphic designer, then, turned an artist. He quickly established himself as a talented artist, being prized at the Nika exhibition 10 years consecutive. The portraits by Takahashi, using frequently air brush, acrylic, and resin, captivate the viewers by his colorful and rhythmic style of representation. As for the reason why he focuses on “human face”, Takahashi points out the fact that almost all human sensory “input and output” occur through the face. Through his creation, the artist raises a question about the increasingly complex sensibility of modern societies as well as the way of communication.

Yu Kawashima

Yu Kawashima got his Ph.D. in Japanese paintings at Aichi University of the Arts. While attending at university, he already received the grand prize at the Sompo Japan Art Award FACE Exhibition in 2014, and quickly caught people’s attention. His monotone and cool texture which remind us of the marble stone at first glance. Although female figures brimmed with quiet expression do not have specific models, they are the blend of plural female expressions got through his artistic filter. Mysterious atmosphere of his works represents an inherent anxiety about living in forlorn modern societies.

Kenki Tsujimoto

Kenki Tsujimoto became the youngest prize winner of the Yataro Noguchi Prize at the Kenten Nagasaki Exhibition in 2007 after studying the basics of paintings at a local art school in his hometown, then oil painting almost on his own. In 2013, he also won the Kenzo Matsuura Prize at the Showa-kai Exhibition (hosted by Nichido Gallery) and made a figure at group exhibitions in various locations. One of his creative themes is “trajectory”: by extracting figures of plants and animals from ancient documents, myths, nature, and handwritings from third persons, he creates mystical and fascinating painting surface. Although still young, his mature viewpoint includes the eternal time axis making us feel the breath of life itself with his exquisite usage of mineral pigments that is breathing in every detail.
