YUCO MARUO: Syn. ―The Obscure Intersect and Swaying Connections―
January 5 - February 1, 2019
Whitestone Gallery Taipei is delighted to announce the solo exhibition of Yuco Maruo at the ZhongXiao space, making the artist’s first solo presentation in Taiwan.
Yuco Maruo was born in Tokyo and graduated from Joshibi College of Art and Design. Reflecting upon her experiences in designing characters for clay animation, the artist adopts techniques for figure-making into her artistic journey that leads to the creation of peculiar and lifelike artworks. The soft-white appearance reminds us of radiant human skin. Sweet and visually lovely, the original yet inconceivable works of Yuco Maruo strike the viewers with silent ambience and absolute serenity. In addition to the representative series from the past years, this show displays “Syn.”, a new series of works, which is also the title of the exhibition. “Syn” is the common prefix of the words: synchronization, synonym and synthesize, representing the collective memory of sentiments and experiences that intertwines with non-linear layers of connection. Impacting the audience with its gentle complexity, feminine existence in figures has been shaped distinctly in the exhibition space. The sound of “Syn.” is identical to these words in Japanese: wholehearted (心), brand-new (新), authenticity (真), as well as faith (信) in which it tells the artist’s awareness of her own identity that deeply rooted in the Japanese culture.
