Little Theatre: KAPPAO, CLASUTTA

Taipei

2026.01.10 - 02.13

Whitestone Gallery Taipei is delighted to present Little Theatre, a duo exhibition by Korean artist Kappao and Indonesian artist Clasutta. Through a diverse range of media including ceramics, wood, and painting, the exhibition reflects on the behavioral patterns and psychological states of contemporary individuals in everyday life, capturing moments that are ordinary yet occasionally chaotic. Both artists adopt a witty and observant perspective to depict the loneliness, emotional connections, and various forms of error that people experience within social structures and daily routines. These familiar and recurring scenes of life are transformed into a series of intimate vignettes, small theatrical settings that mirror the nuances of the human condition.

Kappao (b. 1977, Jeju, South Korea) studied in Decorative Arts at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan in 2009. Her artist name “Kappao” is derived from the Italian pronunciation of her surname “Ko,” indirectly referring to the emotional responses and relationships that arise through attempts at pronunciation. Working across diverse media including ceramics, wood sculpture, and painting, Kappao explores the delicate tension between intimacy and distance in contemporary human relationships. Through a plain yet gentle sculptural language, she creates a series of neutral, de-identified figures whose restrained expressions convey quiet emotion. Her works often unfold in narrative compositions that connect people with plants and animals, private interiors with the natural environment, evoking a warm and tranquil atmosphere of everyday life. Kappao’s works have been exhibited internationally in Italy, Sweden, and South Korea. Recent major exhibitions include her solo exhibition Glance a Face, Open a Heart at Ulsan Art Museum, South Korea in 2025, and the permanent exhibition Rainbow Pond at the National Children’s Museum of Korea since 2024.

ABOUT

Kappao

Who studied Decorative Arts at the Brera Academy in Italy, has developed a varied artistic practice that includes painting, photography, crafts, and sculpture. Her works often feature simple, optimistic shapes and blend soft, poetic colors with a sense of visual balance to convey messages that are both light and deeply meaningful. Her pieces evoke emotions like calm happiness, warm comfort, and a genuine sense of joy, often tapping into universal human experiences.

Beyond her numerous exhibitions in Korea and internationally, Kappao has created playful sculptures and murals for the National Children's Museum, fostering a stronger connection with the public. Her collaborations with brands in design, furniture, and fashion have pushed the boundaries of her art, highlighting her unique creative perspective.

Clasutta (b. 1995, Jakarta, Indonesia), also known as Sutta, began her professional path in architecture before shifting her focus to painting, where she now works as a full-time artist. In 2024, she participated in the Atreyu Moniaga Project, through which she further developed her artistic practice. Working primarily with oil paint, Clasutta’s works are characterized by vivid colors and dynamic compositions, frequently featuring animal figures with anthropomorphic qualities. Drawing on her experiences of professional competition and post corporate life, she transforms everyday observations into visual narratives imbued with a sense of comedy. In this exhibition, Clasutta presents the Certified Human Error series, in which she regards making mistakes as one of the most universal and authentic human conditions. Through animal characters that echo human behavior, she depicts the various strategies people adopt when confronting failure. Attempts to repair mistakes frequently result in greater confusion and absurdity. For the artist, “being human” may be described as an ongoing process of error, and it is precisely where life becomes genuine and compelling.
