MARINO FUNAHASHI: UNSEEN - Quiet Landscapes Within

Karuizawa Gallery 2, 3

2025.10.25 - 11.30

Whitestone Karuizawa is pleased to present “UNSEEN: Quiet Landscapes Within” the first solo exhibition at WHITESTONE by artist Marino Funahashi.

Focusing on invisible time and memory, Marino Funahashi uses natural motifs to abstractly depict scenes from the past in color and texture. Organic traces on the canvas melt together in colors and textures, materializing time itself. The fragments evoke something, quietly resonating with the viewer's innermost memories.
This exhibition will feature paintings from the new series “Trace of quiet landscapes” alongside drawings.

Please enjoy Marino Funahashi's quiet world of vibrant colors and fleeting glimpses of fragility.

ABOUT

MARINO FUNAHASHI

Born in 1989, Aichi Prefecture, Japan Raised by a painter father, she began studying painting in early childhood. She completed a Master’s degree in Spatial Design in the Department of Scenography, Display, and Fashion Design at Musashino Art University. While in school, she created various three-dimensional works, including stage designs. In graduate school, she conducted research on the integration of Japanese paper (washi) and dried flowers. She began exhibiting as an artist in 2022. In addition to holding solo and group exhibitions, she has also produced numerous commissioned works for model rooms, hotels, and office spaces.

Concept:
“Painting Time as Nature” Her work explores how to give presence to what has already passed. Using organic matter as motifs, she abstractly expresses the “impressions” of things and time gained in the past through color and texture. Her paintings evoke certain memories or sensations, aiming to resonate with the inner depths of the viewer’s consciousness. Through this, she captures the ephemeral and intangible nature of the present moment. In an age where AI and digital technology are rapidly evolving, her work focuses on the ambiguous and emotional movements of the human mind.
