스미 야스오

스미 야스오는 GUTAI 미술 협회의 창립 멤버 중 한 명인 시마모토 쇼조와 함께 중고등학교에서 교사로 일하며, 동료였던 시마모토 쇼조의 권유로 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 수학 교사였던 스미는 우연히 물감이 칠해진 주판이 그리는 아름다운 궤적을 발견하게 된다. 그때부터 주판은 진동기나 전통 우산을 포함한 스미의 대표적인 기법이 되었고, 스미는 1955년 GUTAI에 합류하여 해체될 때까지 계속해서 GUTAI전시에 참여했다. 그의 세 가지 원칙인 "절망, 진지함의 부재, 무책임"을 반영한 즉흥적인 다양한 창작물들은 GUTAI의 리더인 요시하라 지로에 의해 극찬 받았으며, 유럽과 미국에서 수많은 전시를 열었던 스미는 특히 이탈리아에서 인지도가 높다.
