TOKO SHINODA

Toko Shinoda (March 28, 1913 - March 1, 2021) is a Japanese artist, printmaker, and essayist. Born in an artistic family, her cousin is the film director Masahiro Shinoda, and her nephew is architect Shigeru Wakayama.

Born in Dailin (former Manchuria), China 1913, Shinoda received training from her father in calligraphy at age six. Thereafter attending an all-girls school, Shinoda began perfecting her calligraphy mostly self-acquired. Several years from 1950, Shinoda had many exchanges with avant-garde writers who belonged to the Academy of Calligraphy Art. In 1956, she took up residence in the United States during a time when the abstract expressionist painting was at its peak where she held various exhibitions across the country.

Shinoda’s elegant ink painting style pushes against the confines of the traditions in calligraphy. Working with primarily sumi ink, Shinoda would paint in backdrops of gold, silver, or platinum leaf, and occasionally in vermilion ink streaks. During her stay in the United States, Shinoda’s works were received in high regards. However, she returned to Japan due to the dry climate of the United States, which was unsuitable for ink painting. Since then, she has continued her art in Japan and published works in various countries engaging in lithographic printing.
