JIRO TAKAMATSU

Jiro Takamatsu, born in Tokyo in 1936, submitted his work for the first time to the Yomiuri Independent exhibition upon graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1958. Starting in 1961, he exhibited the Point series, followed by the String series in the subsequent year. Takamatsu defined a point, based on the definition in Euclidean geometry, as 'an introspective unit that cannot be divided into smaller parts.' He revealed the absent 'points' that embody existing values, which he likened to a particle in physics or a vanishing point in perspective and challenged the traditional concept of space. Moreover, he transformed these zero-dimensional points into a one-dimensional trajectory, defining it as a 'string' which served as a catalyst to explore and expose the real state of time and space in imbalanced ordinariness.

Following the creation of a series of works that represented the principle of absence, Takamatsu began the Shadow series, his significant works after 1964. By artificially creating shadows, he made the world of substance　invisible. The viewers were left to perceive only the shadows, which paradoxically made them aware of the absence of the subject. This way, the works freed the viewer's imaginations from the restriction of reality and purified their consciousness. In the Shadow series, Takamatsu explored the possibility of achieving a 'purer perception of absence.'
