It has already been one year since Chiyu Uemae passed away. In response to this occasion, we organized the first full-scale retrospective exhibition after the death of the artist, at Whitestone Gallery Ginza.
This exhibition will culminate over seventy year of his artistic life and overview his versatile style of productions such as figurative works in his early period, ʻhandstitchʼ after dissolution of GUTAI, prints, later yearʼs creation composed by mixed media, as well as representative works in GUTAI period. While belonging to Gutai Art Association, Chiyu Uemae had kept a distance from performance style or action painting, sought his own non-figurative world brought from unceasing creative process by hands. It would be highly appreciated if visitors could immerse themselves in the exquisite world of this great artist who shows his unique presence in the art scenes both domestic and worldwide. Besides the collection of Chiyu Uemae Memorial Foundation and Whitestone Gallery, part of those works is contributed to the venue by the courtesy of Enocojima Art, Culture and Creative Center (enoco). We cordially invite you to come visit this precious opportunity.

ARTIST

UEMAE CHIYU
While GUTAI being highly acclaimed in recent years, Uemae is one of the oldest witnesses of the group and its period. In contrast to Shimamoto, the charm of Uemae consists in the elaborated matières and its accumulation of introspective energies. Experiencing various jobs such as crane operator, apprentice to traditional dyeing factory in Kyoto, Uemae studies firstly Chinese "Nan-ga" as self-taught, then shifts to oil painting. In 1953, Uemae meets Yoshihara, since then, the artist takes part in every Gutai exhibition until its dissolution. His wide-ranging creation from two-dimensional works which are composed of pattern accumulation by painting knife or of sensitive stitch to sculptural works made of wood or saw dust, comes from his broad experience in his adolescence.
