Ronald Ventura: Pressure & Pleasure

Taipei

2025.05.10 - 06.28

This exhibition is a joyride through Ronald Ventura’s headspace, where hypercars mutate into myth, muscle, and memory. These machines snarl, shimmer, and carry flaming lion heads and ghostly hands gripping the wheel.

Born from the boredom and claustrophobia of 2020, Ventura’s mobile sculptures escape from the white cube and hit the road with intent. Think carbon fiber dreams, anime anxiety, and techno-baroque excess. This is art unchained from its framed and revving at full throttle, tearing open the everyday to let mythology in.

There is pressure, pleasure, and everything in between.

— Curator Ruel Caasi

Whitestone Gallery is pleased to present Filipino artist Ronald Ventura’s solo exhibition,Pressure & Pleasure, marking his first solo show at the gallery’s Taipei space. In collaboration with EMC (Empire Motor Club), the exhibition will feature a special opening event—a limited-time PORSCHE graffiti experience, where visitors are invited to draw on a car wrapped in the artist’s original design, embracing the thrill and joy of creation. The event will take place on May 10 and 11, with celebrity Sunny Wang joining on the first day to unveil the car alongside the artist, Ronald Ventura.

Ronald Ventura, the shape-shifting savant of the Filipino art world, has always danced on the edges of chaos and clarity. His paintings, sculptures, and installations teem with delirious vitality—human figures morphing into beasts, technicolor explosions colliding with grayscale solemnity. So, when the pandemic hit and the world’s art spaces shrank, it was no surprise that Ventura found a new canvas: the open road.

Ventura explores the meaning of mobility and the desire to break free from confinement. By merging hypercars with his distinctive visual vocabulary, he transforms traditional notions of canvas into something far more dynamic. His delicate yet bold surrealist imagery extends across car bodies, rooftops, and rear wings. These imaginative works roar with possibility, blurring the line between reality and the future—and reminding us that even in a world obsessed with efficiency and functionality, there is still room for wonder.

This showcase delves deeper into the evolving relationship between art and technology, exploring themes of mobility, identity, and the human condition through Ventura’s distinctive lens. Visitors can expect a diverse array of artworks, art cars, and accessories, all highlighting the artist’s ongoing dialogue between innovation and tradition. Ventura explains: “I’m fascinated by the experience of speed—how you handle it with precision and control. It mirrors my approach to art. Sometimes, there’s an inevitable clash of images in the process. You can see manipulations of technique layered with cultural and historical references—including pop culture.”

Much like pistons in motion, Ventura’s work embodies a constant push and pull. By engaging visitors through the dynamic interplay of automotive aesthetics and cultural narratives, he challenges conventional boundaries, revealing the transformative power of art. “Art should not be caged in a square or rectangular space, tucked away inside secret rooms,” he asserts. In Ronald Ventura’s world, the car is more than a machine—it’s a myth, a metaphor, a moving masterpiece. By fusing his distinctive artistic style with the world of hypercars, he has created a body of work that transcends genres and defies expectations. His automotive art isn’t just about speed or beauty— it’s about the stories we tell ourselves as we hurtle through time and space.
