LADDIE JOHN DILL: Contained Radiance: Taipei
August 5 - August 27, 2017
Whitestone Gallery Taipei is pleased to announce the opening of Laddie John Dill’s solo exhibition “Contained Radiance: Taipei” on 5th August, 2017. As a member of the California “Light and Space Movement” in the 70’s, Dill’s work explores the relationship between light, space, and senses. This exhibition will include Dill’s “Light Plains, 1969” that was recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and “Death in Venice” which was awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship.
Laddie John Dill was born in Long Beach, CA in 1943. He graduated from Chouinard Art Institute in 1968 with a BFA. After graduating, Dill became a printing apprentice and worked closely with established artists including Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jasper Johns. Dill had his first solo exhibition in New York City with Illeanna Sonnabend Gallery in 1971. He was one of the first artists from Los Angeles to exhibit “Light and Space” work in New York. By crafting light and earthly materials (concrete, glass, sand, metal, etc.) into three-dimensional creations such as luminous sculptures, wall–pieces, installations, the artist has established his fame from 1970s. Works, “Light Sentences” and “Light Plains”(1969), travelled across the US and worldwide, then have witnessed a resurgence of interest until the last decade as well.
Laddie John Dill’s work is in the permanent collections of national and international institutions such as Museum of Modern Art, NY; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Museum of Contemporary Art, CA; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; High Museum, Georgia, Atlanta; The Phillips Collection, Washington DC; Chicago Art Institute, IL; Smithsonian, Washington DC; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen, Denmark; Pio Monte della Misericordia, Naples, Italy; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, CA; and Museo Jumex, Mexco City, Mexico. The artist currently lives and works in Venice, CA where he maintains a studio.
We cordially invite you to join us for this precious opportunity.
