Whitestone Gallery Taipei is pleased to announce the opening of “Harmonics”, a dual solo exhibition of Tetsuo Mizù and Katsuyoshi Inokuma, on 8th July 2017. This is the first thematic exhibition followed by Whitestone Gallery Taipei’s opening group exhibition “I Love Taiwan.” Similar to the idea of “harmonics” in music theory, which delivers distinct sounds to our ears, both artists in the exhibition demonstrate their individuality by skillfully incorporating spatial sensation and melodious flow into paintings. Tetsuo Mizù was born in Tokyo in 1944 and studied paintings in Musashino Art School. He spends his time in France and Spain and has had held exhibitions across countries. His notable commissions include: a stained-glass work for the church of St. Anna in Lavino, Rome in 1987, and a large scale mural for the Nagano Winter Olympics in Japan in 1996. Mizù adopts maritime flag signals, which are used to communicate between sailors, to form new vocabularies in English, French, Italian, or even pronunciations in Japanese. Mizù fuses these patterns with the nostalgic memories of his time in Italy and the times he played flag games with his daughter, to create soft hued rhythmic patterns that signals abstraction. Born in Fukishima Prefecture in 1951, Katsuyoshi Inokuma studied at art colleges in Tokyo. After returning his hometown in Fukushima in 1972, the artist started to actively engage in the local art scene and artist associations. His early works were influenced by Redon, Rembrandt and surrealism: but by early 1990s, Inokuma established his unique style and introduced series of works titled IN BLUE and rose to recognition after winning the Shigeru Aoki Exhibition Award in 1996. Inokuma’s blue-based works are created by layering of pigments while using sandpaper to blur out the boundaries, evincing deep, but warm, visual spaces. Besides IN BLUE series, Whitestone Gallery Taipei will also be showing Inokuma’s recent works on paper, the soft and illusory images can be seen as the artist’s attempt to draw a dialectical relationship between realities and memories.
