JIANG MIAO: Vortex Evolution
Beijing
2026.09.05 - 10.24
Whitestone Gallery Beijing is pleased to announce artist Jiang Miao’s second solo exhibition Vortex Evolution at the gallery’s Beijing space, on view from September 5 to October 24, 2026. Centered on the vortex motif that has continued to develop throughout Jiang Miao’s recent practice, the exhibition draws connections across different bodies of work and traces the evolution of her visual language—from figurative subjects and inner landscapes toward structures of life and a broader cosmic order. Within this trajectory, the vortex becomes both a way of looking at the present and a means of reflecting on the past, while the origins of her newest works gradually come into focus through this process of transformation.

Jiang Miao, "Heavenly Eyes 20260628" 2026, Acrylic on wooden board, carving, 120.0 x 190.0 cm
Working on wooden and aluminium panels, Jiang repeatedly layers acrylic paint before cutting into the surface with a carving knife, allowing previously concealed layers of colour to re-emerge. Acts of covering and removal, destruction and revelation, repetition and difference together form an internal structure of time within the works. Circular, irregularly shaped, and elongated suspended works further move beyond the constraints of the conventional rectangular frame, allowing the vortex to function not only as a visual form within the image, but also as a force that structures the exhibition space and guides the viewer’s movement through it. By placing oil paintings and early woodcuts alongside more recent works, the exhibition seeks to show how Jiang has developed from the linear experience and physical labour of printmaking toward an ongoing exploration of life, spirituality, time, and humanity’s relationship with the cosmos.
