“Active misconception is a part of human instinct. Strictly speaking, neither language nor painting can translate or communicate precisely. The most semantic fields varie depending on the receiver. Although this gap will never disappear, it leaves a possibility of bearing a new life. It is a quite small gap; however, it would bring an opportunity to have a glimpse of the nature of things beyond the surface.”
―Etsu Egami―

Etsu Egami was born in Japan, studied abroad at HfG Karlsruhe (The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design). in Germany, Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing. She reconsiders the possibility of communication from her wide experience of oversea, and studies from various academic fields including the origin of languages. Particularly, she devotes herself to reconsideration of society by words. Her “project” gained international acclaim for the site-specific field survey and documentations. Most recently, solo exhibitions such as “In to the light... Etsu Egami solo show” (Germany), “Dialogue beyond 400 years” (London), “This is not a Mis-hearing game” (Beijing), “Dialogue-4,000 years-Etsu Egami Exhibition” (Chiba City Art and Culture Newcomer Award Winning Project) were held.

“Dialogue in hometown” is the theme of this exhibition. What does conversation with oneself mean---especially for Etsu Egami who has been an enthusiastic interlocutor between herself and others? How oneself feel a sense of incongruity between time and space, its discomfort, collecting own memory and scattered time, and how to face with. “Dialogue in hometown” will focus on this aspect slipping into past-resent-future axes and intertwining them one after another. We cordially invite you to come visit this precious opportunity.

Born in 1994 in Chiba, Japan, the young artist is active in Japan, China, and Europe with sold-out exhibitions. She studied at HFG (The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design) in Germany and at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. She is particularly interested in rethinking society through language. Her 'projects' have received international acclaim for site-specific field research and documentation. Within many of her projects, her most recent ones include: "Into the light... Etsu Egami solo show" (Germany), "Dialogue beyond 400 years" (London), "This is not a Mis-hearing game" (Beijing), "4000 years of dialogue - Etsu Egami solo show" (Chiba City Art and Culture Newcomer Award). She was also highly recommended by Megumi Hatai, curator of the Chiba City Museum of Art, to participate in the VOCA Exhibition 2020 (The Ueno Royal Museum), which is considered a gateway to success for young artists. Egami is currently one of the most sought-after young contemporary artists. The VOCA exhibition invites museum curators, journalists, and researchers from all over Japan to nominate young artists under the age of 40, to present new two-dimensional work. Artists selected for the competition, are unique and embody the inevitable results of their present and future with a clear aim and expressive power recognized internationally. The VOCA exhibition has produced artists who have paved the road for the Japanese art world, such as Takashi Murakami for the first VOCA 1994 exhibition and Yoshitomo Nara for the 1997 exhibition.
