MAKOTO SAITO

Since the 1970s, Makoto Saito has been a graphic designer at the forefront of his time, garnering attention both in Japan and abroad for his innovative work that overturns traditional collage techniques. As a contemporary artist, Saito has shown his work at numerous contemporary art exhibitions since 1979. After a major retrospective exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, entitled "Makoto Saito: Scene [0]" (2008), he stopped his graphic design practice and devoted himself to his art practice (a solo exhibition at Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art scheduled for autumn 2019). In the autumn of 2019, he had a solo exhibition at Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art. The process of creation is as precise, original, and unique to Saito. He would deconstruct and reconstruct a scene from a film that influenced him in his youth, using special computer digital technology. Even on a micro-level, the depictions are generated by overlapping hundreds of layers. When a series of these parts form an image as a singular person, the existence from its mixtures of chaotic stirrings emanated is overwhelming.
